Frank E. Cline, 82, a former DeSoto County Sheriff, passed away Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, in Port Charlotte, Fla.

He was born in Arcadia, Fla., Nov. 3, 1930.

Frank retired from law enforcement after serving his community as a police officer, a FHP trooper, then as deputy sheriff for DeSoto County Sheriff’s Dept., and then finally becoming the sheriff of DeSoto County from 1966 to 1981. He also served as chief deputy for Glades County, and a deputy in Okeechobee, Fla., prior to retirement. While serving as a trooper in Pahokee, Fla., he met the love of his life, Donna Jo Spooner, who was working as a dispatcher for the FHP at the time. Frank was an avid gun collector. He was a member of the Florida Sheriff’s Association, in which he served as president from 1980 until 1981. Frank loved spending time with his family, especially his grandkids. He graduated from Boynton Beach High School, class of 1948. Frank was a member of Calvary Baptist, Arcadia.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Donna Jo Cline of Arcadia; two sons, Frank E. (Belenda Yarbrough) Cline Jr. of New Brockton, Ala., and Craig Landon Cline of Seagrove Beach, Fla.; daughter, Jo Ellen (Pete) Canfield of Arcadia; sisters, Melda (Bob) Allen and Anelia Sullivan, both of Arcadia; seven grandchildren, Zachary (Courtney Wolfe) Cline, Cameron Cline, Caleb Cline, Jordan and Joshua Ostromecki, Heather (Shane) Lowe and Travis Canfield; two great-granddaughters, Journey Rae Ostromecki and McKenzy Rae Cline. Frank is preceded in death by his parents, Frank W. and Alma Landon Cline; and son, Stewart W. Cline.

Visitation will be conducted from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013, from the sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Arcadia. Celebration of Frank’s life will follow at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Wooten officiating.
