Realizing that the new school year will begin Monday, I got to thinking about when I was a student, back in the Dark Ages, and about the stuff they forced me to learn. Where did it get me and how pertinent was it?
This year marked 40 years since I graduated, and I have yet to be approached by anybody insisting that I diagram a sentence. At my 30th high school reunion, our beloved English teacher, Ms. Joy Tinsley, was there and when the conversation turned to doing that, she said, “I don’t know why we even diagrammed those sentences. That was stupid.” Oh, great.
