The Illinois dairy farm where I grew up had a large apple orchard with a wide variety of delicious fruit, available from early summer to frost, so we didn’t have to go far for treats, with special selections set aside for our school lunches. And, even now, that trend continues, with a fresh apple our usual luncheon dessert treat.
Of course Mom also took advantage of that bountiful supply, producing pies, bars and apple crisps, with always a dish of fresh applesauce accompanying meals.
