• DeSoto High School baseball coach this year (soon to be the dean of boys at the Middle School) Richard Bowers Jr., is a strong young man, just shy of 40. He has a quiet confidence bolstered by over 15 years of teaching experience and working in community activities in Arcadia. He’s “Super Cool” in the best possible way. So, it’s a mite hard to fathom a situation that would shake him up. But he’s shook. It was going to be a rather normal weekend for Bowers, and he thought he would cap this particular evening with a bit of fishing. But his wife, Martha, killed that idea. “There’s a church meeting tonight and they want you to be there,” she told him. Bowers is a deacon at Elizabeth Baptist Church, and often attends sessions there. He called the minister, hoping to be excused. Bowers was needed, he was told, if only for a few minutes. So he put his fishing gear aside, and put on a pair of slacks and a sports shirt, and headed for church.
